No Excess Mortality for August 2023

The latest COVID-19 Mortality Group analysis shows there were 100 fewer deaths than predicted (0%) in the month of August 2023, the first month since September 2021.

The August result was due to lower than predicted deaths from respiratory disease and dementia in the month, which was, in turn, the result of low prevalence of influenza (as the flu season was earlier than usual this year) and COVID-19. This was offset by higher than predicted deaths from COVID-19 and other causes.

Providing better support for children with autism and developmental delay

Over the past ten years, the NDIS has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Australians living with disabilities - there is much to be proud of. However, the current Scheme is very different to the original vision.

Research from our latest Paper found that there are over 313,000 participants under the age of 18 in the NDIS, with 75% having a primary disability of autism or developmental delay. The Independent Review of the NDIS presents an opportunity to implement a social model of disability which would better support children and help make the NDIS financially sustainable.
