Excess mortality in first two months of 2023 is mainly due to COVID-19


Our analysis of the latest Provisional Mortality Statistics covering deaths occurring prior to 28 February 2023, shows that the total excess mortality for first two months of 2023 is 6% (+1,500) more deaths than would have been expected in the pandemic had not happened.


The proportion of excess deaths that are not from or related to COVID-19 was lower in the first two months of 2023 than we saw across 2022.

Not a level playing field


The deep economic divide between Australia's rich and poor is in danger of worsening unless wide-ranging government policy reform is undertaken.

Our newest Green Paper, 'Not a Level Playing Field' for the first time brings together a raft of Australian survey data with new analysis to paint a snapshot of income inequality in Australia. Importantly, it builds on the established work of the Australian Actuaries Intergenerational Equity Index and the investment valuation work actuaries pioneered for Federal and State governments.

AACI shows a mild season, driven by lower extreme rainfall and high temperature indices


The Australian Actuaries Climate Index (AACI) has been released for Summer 2022-2023 recording the lowest composite index value since Winter 2020.

This was driven by extreme high temperature and extreme rainfall components, which were both below the reference period average in most of the country. The index measures the frequency of extreme weather conditions and sea levels across Australia compared to the reference period of 1981-2010 and how these vary over time.
