Hoa is a leading life insurance actuary with 35 years’ experience in insurance, superannuation and banking, including 15 years as Partner in charge of KPMG Actuarial & Financial Risk team. Her career highlights include advising a foreign government to establish its risk based capital framework for insurance, acting as Appointed Actuary for 3 different life insurers and leading the Australian retail risk data collection and analysis from 2008-2019.  

Hoa is a regular speaker at industry forums and is the 2020 President of the Actuaries Institute.

John is the Actuaries Institute's Head of Public Policy. John has held senior policy roles in government departments and agencies, ministerial offices, industry associations. John was Group Head of Government & Industry Affairs  with a major financial institution. He joined the Institute in 2014 and he been involved in the development of major Institute submissions to the FSI, Treasury, APRA, ASIC and the Productivity Commission. John has been involved in the development of almost 20 Green Papers and Dialogues. John also supports the Institute's Life, Banking and Superannuation Practice Committees, the Anti-discrimination Working Group, the DI taskforce and the Royal Commission Steering Committee. John holds MA and MBA degrees.

Vanessa is a Practice Excellence Adviser at the Institute. Her prior background spans government, financial services and education in both public and private sectors. Vanessa has worked in the Commonwealth Department of Treasury, including as an adviser in the Federal Treasurer’s office. Her experience in financial services was with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia Group and included corporate strategy, equities research and government relations. Vanessa has also worked as a primary school teacher. She has a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) and Bachelor of Education (Primary).

Aaron was a physicist and is now an actuary and Principal at Finity experienced in general insurance and accident compensation. Recently he has set up and leads Finity’s Big Data practice, also known as Defin’d and is committed to actuaries in analytics playing a further significant role in this space.  He is a strong believer that actuaries help organisations better understand their businesses, their customers and hence are well placed to help with issues of strategic importance.  Actuaries, data and analytics in business problem solutions will only deepen as the world’s generation, retention and ability to interrogate data explodes.

Andrew is a principal based in Melbourne and is an experienced actuary with expertise in Appointed Actuary roles, applying analytics (scenario analysis, capital, pricing) and Organisational Development.  He works with a range of insurers informing wise financial decision making and protecting businesses by ensuring compliance with prudential requirements.  In addition to having worked in a range of corporates leading actuarial and risk services, he is also passionate about improving education and for Australia to aspire to be the healthiest country. He works to help leaders and their teams apply actuarial analytics and build the capabilities to put a shared vision into action.

Rob Daly  Rob Daly

Robert Daly has worked in the life insurance and financial services industry since 1987. He started his career in Dublin, Ireland working for a life insurer, then moved to London to work for Munich Re. He spent 12 years from 1995 working as an actuarial consultant for Tillinghast (now part of Willis Towers Watson) in its Melbourne, New York and Sydney offices. From 2008-12, Robert was the Chief Actuary for TAL Limited and, in 2012, became the Chief Risk Officer for CommInsure.

Robert took a year out from working in 2017/18 to complete a Masters of Economic Analysis at University of Sydney. Having not gone to university after school, this fulfilled an ambition and provides another interesting perspective. Currently Robert is back at CommInsure as Chief Risk Officer.  As well as being a qualified actuary, Robert is also a charterholder of the CFA Institute and is a CERA. Robert recently led an Institute Task Force on the review of the Code of Professional Conduct and was also a member of the Disciplinary Scheme Review task force. Despite years of mountain biking and vowing to never wear lycra, Robert is now also a keen road biker and also spends too much time coding.

Nathan is a Director at PricewaterhouseCoopers and a recognised specialist on superannuation (pensions), group insurance, retirement modelling, data analytics, public policy, FinTech, financial advice and the impact of the ageing population on products, services and workforce.  He assists clients including Boards, CEOs and management teams across a variety of different entities, including the provision of strategic advice, assistance with mergers, group insurance reviews, member outcomes and Actuarial valuations. Nathan has also been involved in the provision of outsourcing tenders and service provider benchmarking.

An actuary by training, Douglas first joined Platinum in 2003 as an investment analyst, having spent some time at the Commonwealth Bank as a product actuary and, prior to that, as an investment manager at Aegon Asset Management in Edinburgh. Mathematical prowess was not Douglas’ only forte. His gift for communication and his convivial nature soon earned him the additional responsibility of handling presentations to advisers and clients.  Douglas left Platinum in 2008 to relocate to Singapore where he made a significant contribution to developing Standard Chartered Bank’s equity broking business.  Having re-joined Platinum in 2013 as an investment specialist, Douglas now dedicates himself to serving as a bridge between Platinum’s investment team and the financial advisory community.

Bill has extensive experience within the general insurance area. He is currently General Manager Product at Covermore where he looks after the product, underwriting and actuarial teams of the company for travel insurance. He was previously Executive Manager Pricing Commercial Customer at Suncorp within the Chief Data Office (where he managed a large team of actuaries and analysts covering valuation, pricing and analysis of a wide range of general insurance products across the Suncorp Group), having held other Executive Manager positions with Suncorp prior to that. He has also held Chief Underwriting Officer/Executive Manager roles with Allianz Global Assistance, RACQ Insurance and CUNA Mutual. In 2011 he was President of the Queensland Branch of ANZIIF (Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance).

Simon is a Director at SLC Actuarial and has more than twelve years of experience as a consulting actuary specialising in general and health insurance. He was formerly a Senior Manager and Appointed Actuary at Ernst & Young Actuarial Services where he advised Boards and executives on strategy, analytics and actuarial compliance. As the Australia lead for Cytora, an EQT backed InsureTech that recently raised US$33m, Simon led the development of AI powered insurance pricing models for insurers. His other experience includes management consulting at Partners in Performance and being an entrepreneur.

Leigh joined Hollard in 2016 and is currently the Chief Actuary responsible for Hollard’s Actuarial function, including the role of the Appointed Actuary.  After working in the insurance industry for more than 20 years, Leigh’s experience has spanned a number of areas including reserving, reinsurance and capital management as well as product-development and pricing. Prior to her latest appointment in 2016, Leigh has served in a number of senior roles both in Australia and New Zealand including Appointed Actuary, Senior Consultant, as well as Reinsurance and Reserving Manager roles.

Pauline joined Genworth as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director in March 2020. She has over 25 years of senior management, financial and strategic experience in wealth management and insurance in Australia, New Zealand and globally.  Prior to joining Genworth, Pauline held senior leadership and strategic roles in Challenger, AMP and RGA Reinsurance Company. She has also served as Chief Financial Officer and Appointed Actuary of Asteron Life, and consulted to the insurance and wealth management industry at KPMG and Tillinghast-Towers Perrin.  An active industry participant, Pauline has served on the boards of the Institute of Actuaries, the Financial Services Council and the Australian Institute of Insurance and Finance, as well as been a member of and chaired numerous committees of these bodies.

Pauline is a Fellow of each of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, the New Zealand Society of Actuaries, the Actuarial Society of South Africa, Finsia, the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance & Finance and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She also holds a Master of Economics degree from Macquarie University.
