Dr Norman Swan hosts The Health Report on the ABC’s Radio National, and Tonic on ABC Television. The Health Report is the world’s longest running health program in the English speaking world and Norman has won many awards for his work including Australia’s top prize for journalism, the Gold Walkley.

Norman trained in medicine in Scotland and paediatrics in London and Sydney before joining the ABC and has hosted many other programs on radio and television.

He has also been the medical host on Channel Ten’s Biggest Loser for the past six seasons and in September 2015 made a high impact Four Corners on waste in the healthcare system. Norman has consulted to the World Health Organisation, has co chaired a global meeting of health ministers in Bamako West Africa and has been the Australian correspondent for both the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and the British Medical Journal (BMJ). Norman is also co-founder of Tonic Health Media, an integrated health television channel and production company which has an audience of over 10 million people per month.

David Bowen was the inaugural CEO of the National Disability Insurance Agency from his appointment in 2012 until his recent retirement. Prior to that time, he worked as a consultant to the Commonwealth Treasury and Department on the NDIS.

David has had close to 30 years’ experience in personal injury insurance issues. He was General Manager of the NSW Motor Accident Authority for 12 years, represented NSW on the Asbestos Injury Compensation Fund Board of Directors, the HIH Creditors Committee, and was a member of the Heads of Treasury Officers Committee looking at the Ipp review. Earlier in his career David was the architect of the Professional Standards Scheme and has been a key contributor in focussing statutory compensation scheme on outcomes.

David intends to draw from all of this experience to set out some challenges for personal injury insurance both immediately and in the years ahead.

Mark Coyne is the Chief Executive in January 2012, after joining EML in 2010.

With over 20 years’ experience in the workers compensation sector, in both strategic and operational roles, Mark previously held the position of Chief Executive/Managing Director of Coal Services Pty Ltd, a specialist workers compensation insurance scheme for the coal mining industry. 

Between 2003 and 2009 Mark held various positions within GIO, culminating in his appointment in 2007 as Executive General Manager of their national workers compensation claims business. 

Prior to his career in insurance and workers compensation, Mark achieved success as a professional rugby league player with St George, Queensland and Australia.

Mark was a Director of Police and Citizens Youth Club for 10 years and a Director of the NRMA Road Service between 2000-2003.

Clare Amies was appointed to Chief Executive of WorkSafe Victoria in June 2015.  WorkSafe is responsible for preventing workplace injuries, supporting injured workers and managing insurance and compensation for both workers and employers.  Clare has held several Executive Director roles at WorkSafe, including ED of the Insurance Business Unit, and ED of the Health and Disability Strategy Group.

Over the past 15 years, Clare has held senior management positions in health and community service.  Prior to joining WorkSafe, she was the Chief Executive Officer of Western Region Health Centre.

Clare is a board member of Leadership Victoria and WorkSafe Victoria.


John Nagle is a senior insurance executive who brings a wealth of private and public sector management experience in business strategy, innovation, change, client relationship management, underwriting, reinsurance and corporate governance across the General and Commercial Insurance sectors.

Currently, John is the Group Executive, Workers Insurance at icare. icare (Insurance & Care NSW) is insurance and care services provider for New South Wales. It provides insurance and care for 3.4 million workers, motorists and builders and 284,000 employers.

John's 37 year insurance career has included a number of significant executive posts at major insurance providers, including Executive Director of Insurance Operations at WorkCover Insurance, CE of Lumley Insurance, Executive General Manager for Corporate & Specialty Insurance at Suncorp and Chief Operating Officer - Retail at Vero.

Carmel Donnelly became the Acting Chief Executive of the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) in March 2017.

Her previous roles include Executive Director in SIRA, General Manager, Strategy and Performance for the Safety, Return to Work and Support agencies in NSW, General Manager and Deputy General Manager at the Motor Accidents Authority of NSW and Director, Strategy and Planning with Fire and Rescue NSW.  She has been a Review Director in the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet and an Associate Director in NSW Health.

Ms Donnelly holds an Executive Master of Business Administration from the Australian Graduate School of Management, a Master of Public Health from the Faculty of Medicine, Sydney University and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours Psychology).  She is a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and an Associate Fellow of the Australasian College of Health Service Management.

Geoff Atkins has been consulting in General Insurance since 1984.  He is a principal at Finity Consulting, the specialist insurance and actuarial consulting firm.  Geoff’s experience covers a wide range of workers compensation and motor injury schemes in Australia and NZ.  He recently co-authored the Actuaries Institute’s Green Paper on Mental Health and Insurance.

Joe Calafiore joined the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) in August 2008 bringing with him strong public policy and communications experience gained from a range of Government, media and communication roles.

Joe was Head of Community Relations, where he was responsible for road safety, marketing, communication, legislative and legal functions for the TAC, before he was appointed CEO in July 2015.

Prior to joining the TAC, Joe worked as a Senior Advisor to the Victorian Minister for Police, Advisor in the challenging portfolios of Transport, Major Projects, Finance (including WorkSafe and TAC) and Industrial Relations.

Joe was born and raised in Geelong and is committed to improving the region’s future as a member of the Committee for Geelong’s strategy and policy committee. He holds a Masters of Commerce from the University of Melbourne and maintains a healthy interest in public policy and communication issues.

Chris Colquhoun is the Chief Medical Officer at icare (Insurance & Care NSW). icare is the largest general insurance provider in Australia. With a commercial mind and a social heart, icare delivers insurance and care services to the NSW community through five distinct service lines – dust diseases care, HBCF, lifetime care, self-insurance and workers insurance. 

Chris is an Occupational and Environmental Physician. Occupational Medicine takes a preventative approach to health and safety in the workplace by looking at the effects of the work environment on an individual’s health and how their health can affect their work.

As Chief Medical Officer, Chris is charged with ensuring operational excellence and efficiency in icare’s insurance and care schemes. His mandate is to improve the customer experience by improving the delivery of customer centred optimal care, and ensuring icare provides the right treatment at the right time to allow for the best possible outcomes for its customers.

Hugh Miller is a left-handed actuary at Taylor Fry, where he has worked for the past decade. During that time he has been involved in a wide variety of projects across general insurance. With a PhD in statistics, he has a particular interest in improving the models and techniques used in actuarial work. He also applies these techniques to corporate analytics projects and has been technical lead of Taylor Fry’s annual valuation of the New Zealand Welfare system.

Tim Clark joined the IAG in November 2010 as the Chief Actuary responsible for leading the Group Actuarial and Capital function, which looks after insurance liabilities and capital modelling. In September 2014, Tim joined the Personal Insurance division of IAG as Executive General Manager, Risk and Performance. His role has the responsibility to ensure that Personal Insurance achieves its short and long term targets, within risk appetite, through the provision of financial and risk information, insight and challenge to create effective decision making. In February 2016, Tim was appointed as Executive General Manager, Commercial in the Australian Consumer Division.

Prior to joining IAG, Tim spent 19 years at Swiss Re working in a variety of senior positions in Australia, Switzerland, Hong Kong and the UK.

With over 20 years of international experience as an Actuary and Risk manager, Tim has led underwriting and pricing teams; operated as Appointed/Approved Actuary in multiple regulatory regimes throughout Asia, as well as Head of Group Operational Risk Management.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and his experience spans both the Property & Casualty (General Insurance) and Life & Health Insurance industries.

Julian Williams is a former partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He has embarked on the next stage of his career in a newly established venture - cordius. From a lived experience with mental health, Julian is committed and enthusiastic about challenging and supporting businesses to do more in this area. Connecting with people is core to how Julian operates. He enjoys imagining the potential future, and is actively following his ambition of working at the intersection of social and commercial opportunities.

Kim Birch is the Chief Executive of South Australia’s inaugural Compulsory Third Party Insurance Regulator, which came into effect on 1 July 2016 with the establishment of private insurer underwriting of SA’s CTP Scheme.

For over 20 years, Kim has been working in personal injury and disability insurance in both insurer and regulatory roles. Prior to moving to South Australia, Kim was with the National Disability Insurance Agency contributing to the testing and design of the NDIS.

Kim’s regulatory experience stems from her years with the Motor Accident Insurance Commission, the Queensland CTP Scheme Regulator.

Kim is enjoying the challenges of establishing new regulatory functions, building the early intervention and injury recovery framework and designing the underwriting model for the SA CTP Scheme for the benefit of motor vehicle owners and injured claimants.

Eugene McGarrell is the General Manager Health and Community Engagement at icare, leading initiatives to improve mental health outcomes. Starting his career as a mental health nurse,, he has spent almost 4 decades in various roles in government health and social services in the UK and Australia, on a mission to tackle the 'wicked' problems affecting vulnerable people. Hs is a member of the Mental Health Community Advisory Council, highlighting issues that affect the mental health and wellbeing of the people of NSW.  

Pamela Rutledge is the CEO of RichmondPRA, a leading not-for-profit organisation providing community based support and employment for people living with a mental health issue in NSW and South-East Queensland. 

In her early career, Pam worked as a Social Worker in front-line mental health service delivery, and was the Executive Officer of the Richmond Inquiry.  Before joining the not-for-profit sector in 2009, Pam had over 35 years experience in senior roles in the NSW government, including experience in health, housing, and ageing and disability. 

Pam’s particular interests are the maintenance of high performing organisations through periods of massive change, co-design with people with a personal lived experience, the growth of social enterprises and the growth and development of the consumer and peer workforce.

Pam is also the Chair of the Mental Health Coordinating Council, and sits on the Mental Health Review Tribunal.
