Susan Looi BEc, FIAA, CERA
Head of Financial Risk, ANZ Wealth & Digital, ANZ Banking Group

Susan Looi has more than 20 years of extensive local and international financial services experience, spanning insurance, reinsurance, superannuation and banking.  

As Head of Financial Risk Susan leads risk appetite and capital, insurance, credit, market and liquidity risk oversight across ANZ Bank’s insurance, superannuation and managed funds, digital, margin lending and share broking businesses. 

Prior to ANZ Susan headed the Capital & Strategic Solutions business for reinsurer RGA and spent several years overseas in Switzerland as the Group Chief Pricing Actuary for global insurer Zurich Financial Services.  Susan has led multi-disciplinary teams across different geographies and comes from a consulting background.

Susan is a director on Boards and an active Committee member of the Risk Management Association of Australia, as well as the convenor of the Institute of Actuaries’ Risk Management Practice Committee.

Elizabeth Baker
Director – Ernst & Young 

Elizabeth has worked for more than 25 years in the financial services industry in Australia, Europe and Asia. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (FIAA), an Associate of CPA Australia and holds a Masters of Applied Finance.

Elizabeth has been a Director in Actuarial Services at EY since 2016. Prior to joining EY, she worked at CommInsure and was the Appointed Actuary for CMLA.

Before returning to Australia in 2013, Elizabeth worked internationally for 15 years in Europe, Japan and the Asia Regional office in Singapore for AXA, in a range of senior Actuarial, Risk and Finance roles across a number of insurance and reinsurance businesses. She has extensive operational experience in Finance, Capital Management, Actuarial, Risk Management and Strategy.

Elizabeth is the deputy convenor of the Institute of Actuaries’ Risk Management Practice Committee.

Peter has nearly 20 years’ experience, principally as an actuarial consultant, across general insurance (including serving as CRO of a Lloyd’s syndicate), health and wider fields. He has worked in New Zealand, the UK and Australia. Peter is a Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA) and is also chair of the RMPC Education subcommittee and co-chair of the Cyber Insurance Working Group.

Ashutosh Bhalerao
Appointed Actuary, ClearView Life Assurance Ltd

Ash has 20 years experience in the financial services industry, specialising in life insurance. He has a wide range of experience including risk management, capital management, financial reporting, asset liability management, product pricing and reinsurance. Prior to ClearView, Ash was the Appointed Actuary for Swiss Re Life And Health Australia and has also held other senior actuarial roles in TAL, Challenger and AMP. Ash is also a member of the LIWMPC.

Gloria Yu
Director, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu



Gloria is a Director at Deloitte and has been working in the general insurance industry since 2001. She has been the Statutory Actuary for a number of Asia-Pacific general insurers and reinsurers, and has led actuarial teams across a range of projects including formulation of risk management strategies, review of risk management frameworks and internal capital adequacy assessment processes (ICAAP).  Prior to joining Deloitte, Gloria was at Westpac/BT Financial Group where she advised on the integration of the Westpac and St George insurance portfolios.



Gloria is actively involved in the Actuaries Institute.  She has served on the Board of the Actuaries Institute (Council) for six years and contributed to the strategic direction, particularly on risk management and leadership, within the actuarial profession.  Gloria is the Convenor of the Actuaries Institute’s Mentoring Program Working Group, and a member of the Risk Management Practice Committee (RMPC), Audit & Risk Council Committee (ARCC) and Leadership and Career Development Committee (LCDC). She serves as the LCDC liaison representative on RMPC.

Verne Baker
Head of Asian Markets GI Actuarial, KPMG

Verne has over 25 years’ experience as a consulting actuary in non-life insurance and has been the outsourced CRO for Lawcover Insurance Pty Ltd since 2015. Throughout his career he was worked on many ERM projects both in Australia and overseas. Between 2001 and 2013 he was based in Asia and led Watson Wyatt’s and Deloittes’ GI Actuarial practices across Asia.

Nick Cowdery
Director, InterAct Search

Nick has over 17 years experience recruiting professionals for Insurance, Actuarial and Risk Management roles in Australia and the UK. Nick has in depth knowledge in the Life, Non-Life, Risk, Investment and Superannuation industries placing candidates at all levels from analyst to CEO.

More recently, Nick has developed an interest in exploring the way recruitment works for both employers and candidates. New tech solutions can make the process more effective and efficient and hopefully, more satisfying for all concerned.......

Specialties: Sourcing candidates with risk, actuarial, quantitative and technical insurance expertise.

Ben Facer
Chief Risk and Governance Officer, NGS Super

Ben has over 20 years’ experience in the superannuation industry, primarily working as an actuarial consultant to superannuation trustees. Ben was a consultant at Mercer for almost 20 years, with roles covering Australia, Continental Europe, and Asia. More recently, Ben was a Partner at Deloitte.

Currently, Ben is the CRO at NGS Super, representing a growing number of actuaries in senior management positions within superannuation funds.

Ben is also the Convenor of the Actuaries Institute Superannuation Practice Committee, as well as a member of the Retirement Strategy Group.

Jennifer Chung
Actuary, Willis Re Australia

Jennifer has nearly 10 years’ experience in reinsurance broking and consulting. In her current role, she focuses on pricing and structuring reinsurance programmes, as well as providing advice on reinsurance placement strategy for general insurers and government clients. Prior to working at Willis Re, Jennifer worked as a consultant at PwC.

Director at SLC Actuarial

Simon is a Director at SLC Actuarial and has more than twelve years of experience as a consulting actuary specialising in general and health insurance. He was formerly a Senior Manager and Appointed Actuary at Ernst & Young Actuarial Services where he advised Boards and executives on strategy, analytics and actuarial compliance. As the Australia lead for Cytora, an EQT backed InsureTech that recently raised US$33m, Simon led the development of AI powered insurance pricing models for insurers. His other experience includes management consulting at Partners in Performance and being an entrepreneur.

Chief Risk Officer at Arch LMI Australia

Joseph has over 15 years’ experience working in Financial Services, specialising in General Insurance, and is currently the Chief Risk Officer of Arch LMI Australia. Joseph has held roles in both corporate and consulting environments at companies such as Insurance Australia Group, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Westpac. Joseph has experience in Pricing, Liability Valuations, Capital Management and Risk Management,  and was previously the Appointed Actuary for the general insurance entities of the Westpac Group.

vanessa beenders Vanessa Beenders
Practice Excellence Adviser, Actuaries Institute

Vanessa is a Practice Excellence Adviser at the Institute. Her prior background spans government, financial services and education in both public and private sectors. Vanessa has worked in the Commonwealth Department of Treasury, including as an adviser in the Federal Treasurer’s office. Her experience in financial services was with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia Group and included corporate strategy, equities research and government relations. More recently, Vanessa was a primary school teacher. Vanessa has a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) and Bachelor of Education (Primary).

Chief Actuary, Hollard

Leigh joined Hollard in 2016 and is currently the Chief Actuary and is responsible for Hollard’s Reserving, Capital and Reinsurance functions, as well as holding the position of Appointed Actuary (for Australia and NZ).

With over two decades experience in the insurance industry, more than half of which has been in General Insurance and has spanned a number of areas including reserving, reinsurance, capital management and some product-development and pricing.  Prior to her latest appointment in 2016, Leigh has served in a number of senior roles both in Australia and abroad including Appointed Actuary, Senior Consultant, as well as Reinsurance and Reserving Manager roles.
