Mentoring FAQs

Why mentoring?

Having a mentor is one of the most valuable and effective development opportunities anyone can pursue. A relationship with a mentor is based on encouragement, constructive feedback, openness, mutual trust, respect, and a willingness to learn and share, and can provide you with the essential knowledge to succeed, both professionally and personally.

How long does the Mentoring Program run for?

The Mentoring Program runs from March to October 2024. Mentors and mentees may choose by mutual agreement to continue the relationship beyond December this is however this is outside the Institute’s formal arrangement. Applications for the 2024 Mentor Program have now closed. You can apply now for the next intake starting March 2025.

How are applicants selected?

Participants are selected on the strength of their application. These will be reviewed before deciding on the final participants to ensure those selected will benefit the most from the program. Places are limited so if your application is not successful for this session, we will encourage you to reapply next time around.

How are mentees and mentors matched?

Matches are based on a mentee's career goals and a mentor's background and experience.

I am not based in Australia. Can I still apply?

Yes, of course. The program is open to all members who meet the program criteria for mentees and mentors

How much does it cost to participate?

The program is free for members.

How often should mentor/mentees meet?

As a guideline, we recommend that mentees and mentors meet at least once a month for the duration of the program for a minimum of 1 to 2 hours. Pairs may meet more regularly if required and should you both agree.

Will mentees and mentors from the same organisation be matched?

For mentees to get the best out of the program they will be paired with a mentor from outside of their organisation. The benefits associated with a matching process across the industry are numerous.

What if the Mentor isn’t the right 'fit' for my needs?

Sometimes, regardless of the information provided, Mentors and Mentees don’t always "fit." If this happens, we suggest that you discuss this with the Member Engagement Manager at HQ.

How are mentees and mentors matched?

This program is about career development and mentors and mentees. It is not guaranteed that pairs will be from the same practice area or location. Matches are based on a mentee's career goals and a mentor's background and expertise.

Are there additional networking opportunities for the mentees?

Mentees are based around the country. A ‘virtual’ space will be set up for participants to talk, share ideas, and ask questions.
